Prior to arriving at college, I had heard of, and really valued, the "weekend". But the concept of "the weekender" was completely foreign to me. I can't speak for other schools, but at this university we have created a brand new term for the one weekend a year in which our football team...and thus our band...and thus half the student population....makes the trip up to San Fran to play one of the two bay area teams.
I got to bus up for my third weekender recently, and it was the best one of the bunch. Not only did we get to dress up as an aisle of a grocery store (hello juniors and their cereal), but we got to bus with the tenors and basically just have a ball.
The band takes SIX tour buses up to NorCal ever year. And we usually go in a giant caravan. Bus 6 - the tenornet bus - struggled to keep up with the other buses and at one point couldn't exactly make it up a hill. At another point we might've broken all traffic laws and driven on a sidewalk.
Saturday night was spent in the city at Boudin's where I basically just ate a lot of bread. There's no rest for the weary. We had Saturday morning practice at seven before our noon game. This meant "lunch" at ten in the morning.
Band is all about "hurry up and wait" so we booked it off the bus and played really quickly at the USC tailgate before heading to the stadium and waiting a solid half an hour on the field before the game.

And if you follow college football, you'll know the game. It was wonderful. And about as good as last year's win at home. The competition of the bands wasn't even a competition. The best part: we played their fight song at the final fumble (because it's our turnover song).
What are classes?
As always, Fight on.
