Our first stop was at the Southernmost Point of the continental US. The line was out the door - or rather down the sidewalk - for an unobstructed photo with the sign, so we just went ahead and took a photo behind the marker at the place that is really the southernmost point.
We then made a stop at the Key West lighthouse and climbed all eighty something steps to get the full view of the town. You could literally see ocean all the way around from just that small height!
We wandered down Duval street where all the kitschy tourist shops are, before stopping at the square on the far side of the key for a view of the sunset and a look at Oprah's island - we finally concluded that it probably wasn't Oprah's island, but it was nice to pretend so. And the sunset was breathtaking. There is something about sunset over water that gives those last few rays of light an extra special something.
Though we were surrounded by thousands of others just like us, and those from the ginormous cruise ship docked at the key, we had an afternoon well-spent at the southernmost point of the continental US. A perfect way to start off our week of water, sunscreen, & smiles.
